THOSE FROM BELOW is an interactive VR documentary about the Le Bois du Cazier mining disaster in Belgium, 1956. Explore the everyday lives of coal miners and delve 1000m below the ground to uncover the events that lead up to the disaster and what its aftermath meant for Europe. In 1956, one of the largest mining accidents in Europe occurred in Marcinelle, a small town in Belgium, in the Le Bois du Cazier coal mine. 262 miners died. THOSE FROM BELOW takes a documentary approach to the event. Francesco Cicora, father of Michele Cicora, lost his life in the accident and was one of 14 miners who could not be identified in the accident. THOSE FROM BELOW is told by Michele, who only got to know his father through letters. An experience shared by many Italians at the time. Today, decades later, Michele Cicora is responsible for identifying 3 more of the 14 unknowns. On his path to shedding more light on the events of 1956, Michele was able to find out a lot about the families and those who lost someone that day.
History
MEMENTOES is a Horizon Europe funded project building immersive video games for museums engaged in the topics of memorialisation and transitional justice. Those From Below was created in close cooperation with the Le Bois du Cazier museum in Marcinelle, Belgium.
